I thought you guys might like that excerpt from the Snowpiercer book sold with the French dvd set, where Bong is asked about Chris. (Forgive my wonky translation.)
Jean-Marc Rochette: Korean movies, including yours, openly criticize America. Choosing Chris Evans and giving him an anti-Captain America role, was that a coincidence or your calculation?
Bong Joon-Ho: That wasn’t my intention at all. Chris Evans is very well known for his blockbuster movies, but he’s got wide acting range and has interpreted various kinds of roles. This is what attracted me the most. The character, Curtis, really shakes up his public image and he’s the one searching for this anti-Captain America feel. It was really hard, for me and for him, to hide his muscular frame. However when you spend some time with him, you realize how his complex and delicate personality is far from the manly image he can reflect with his football captain’s body.
